Project Outcomes

The Place Based Model has enabled significantly disadvantaged groups to develop a collaborative framework that increases community productivity, promotes community leadership, facilitates the development of sustainable community initiatives such as social enterprises and provides an inclusive environment where all community members can participate.  These outcomes have been demonstrated through the success of the following projects:
  • In Coffs Harbour, TAFE Outreach has worked with Burnside and teenage mums to develop a peer mentoring resource for teenage mothers that will be distributed throughout the nation.  This project has promoted leadership within the Burnside client group and has resulted in the young women, once completing their TAFE training,  working for Burnside as peer mentors.
  • The Goonellabah Youth Enterprise Project has enabled youth at risk in the Lismore region to develop two youth enterprises, Yummy Catering and the Pulse Cafe.  These enterprises are managed by YWCA and staffed by the young people.  Individual students are supported through YWCA through case management with TAFE staff providing accredited training as required.
  • The Bowraville Better Factory enable a range of community members, both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal, to collaboratively participate in a number of social enterprises that include design, landscaping, textiles and catering.  These enterprises have been developed through a community network that has been instrumental in strengthening and revitalising the Valley’s third sector.
  • In Caincross, community members with a mental health illness have been working with the local community group (New Horizons), Council and Industry to develop a demonstration park for sustainable living.  The park is designed as a tourist resource for the Port Macquarie/Hasting Shire and demonstrates best practice in organic gardening, water harvesting and recycling.
